Dal Vada is a popular snack in the southern region of India. And this Vada can be used to make many more other recipe like Vadai Kolambu, Rasa Vadai, Vadai Avial etc. Vadai Avial is a very simple recipe which can be made within ten minutes if the Vadai is readily available.
Dal Vada (Paruppu Vadai) – 5 to 6 (Broken into pieces)
Grated Coconut – from ½ coconut (1 cup)
Yogurt (Dahi) – 2 tbsp
Salt to taste
Green Chilli – 3 to 5
Cumin (Jeera) Seeds – 1 tsp
Coconut Oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard Seeds (Rai) – ¾ tsp
Cumin (Jeera) Seeds – ½ tsp
Curry Leaves – from 2 twigs
Crush the Coconut, Green Chilli and Cumin Seeds coarsely with little water. Keep aside.
Heat the Oil in a pan. Add Mustard and allow it to crackle. Add Cumin seed and allow it to crackle. Add Curry Leaves, Stir for a few seconds till the leaves become a little crisp.
Add the Vada Pieces and stir cook for a minute.
Add the Coconut, Green Chilli and Cumin Seed mix.
Add Salt and ¼ cup of water. Mix well.
Cover the pan with a lid and simmer for 5 to 6 minutes in low to medium flame. Add Yogurt. Mix. Adjust Salt. Let it cook for about a minute.
Serve with Rice and Rasam or Rice and Sambar etc.
- Instead of Yogurt, raw mangoes can also be used.
- Coconut oil gives a nice aroma to this dish than the other cooking oils.
