Ulundhu sadam (Urad dal rice) is a very popular dish in south india. Black gram dal has a very high nutritive value and is packed full of protein, calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron.
This dish goes well with ellu thuvail (sesame seed chutney).
Rice: 1 cup
Urad dal (split and skinned dal): 1/3 cup
Garlic pods: 15-20
Fenugreek seeds: ½ tsp
Cumin seeds: 1 tbsp
Sesame (gingelly) oil: 1 tbsp
Grated coconut: 1/3 cup
Water: 4 cups
Salt to taste
Rinse rice and urad dal well.
Heat water in a pressure cooker. Allow the water to boil. Add all the ingredients together and mix well.
Let it boil for 3-4 mins. Cover and pressure cook. Cook on medium heat till one whistle and then simmer for 15 mins.
Serve hot with ellu thuvail (sesame seed chutney).
